Bohm Dialogue as a Way to Support Adult Development
Marie-Ève Marchand
Bohm dialogue in its pure form never took root in organisations. Marie-Ève Marchand argues there's still a place for it, not in business, but in programs designed to shift adult consciousness from "either/or" to "both/and" thinking.
Few practitioners have continued using Bohm dialogue in its original 1991 format; it didn't take root in organisations despite major efforts. Marie-Ève Marchand argues there's still a place for it: supporting the passage from conventional to post-conventional consciousness. At Laval University in Quebec, she and colleague Mario Cayer designed a 135-hour program for senior managers called "Complexity, Consciousness and Management." Using a control group and the Sentence Completion Test, they found significant movement toward post-conventional orders in participants; while the control group showed no change. Long-term practitioners report profound effects: greater aptitude for conflict, more inner spaciousness, stronger self, less fear. One said: "The self-knowledge is tremendous... I've become a more integrated kind of person." Marchand now runs monthly dialogue practice groups in Montreal, drawing participants from coaching schools and leadership organisations who share "a true interest in their own development." The paper offers empirical support for dialogue's developmental impact.
