ADWOW Set 2 – Functional Communication Part 1

AofPD

What does it mean to communicate functionally, and why does it matter before dialogue can begin? The Academy's second ADWOW set opens the question of how we actually speak and listen in practice.

Members of the Academy can read the full annotation and access the source material.

Functional Communication Part 1 is the first module in Set 2 of the Academy's Art and Discipline of Working with Others (ADWOW) practitioner programme, building on the foundational awareness established in Set 1. The module introduces participants to the concept of functional communication: the basic but often overlooked mechanics of how meaning is sent, received, and distorted in everyday interaction. Participants begin to notice the gap between what is intended and what lands, developing a more precise attention to their own communicative habits. This groundwork is essential preparation for the deeper relational and dialogic skills the ADWOW programme develops across its full arc.
