Education systems include the framework of institutions, policies and practices designed to provide and regulate education in a country or region. They inevitably impact on teaching and learning in the classroom, but how aware are we of these impacts and the agency we have to shape them? In this session, we’ll share personal stories from different countries about the different ways in which people experience the influence of the system. We’ll respond to these stories in dialogue together and ask ourselves about the extent to which schools, teachers, students, and communities can retain some freedom to think about what education is for and how it should be experienced.

Neil Phillipson is a tutor and mentor to trainee teachers in the UK. He works broadly with dialogue in education and is an associate of Oracy Cambridge, SAPERE P4C, and Generation Global. Neil is an APDP and coach to the Academy’s Dialogic Classroom research project.
