Jane Ball is a co-founder of the Academy and a long-standing dialogue practitioner whose work has taken dialogue into some of the most challenging institutional settings in the UK. Threshold Dialogue, published in 'The World Needs Dialogue! Three: Shaping the Profession' (2021), documents how a structured dialogue programme brought together participants from across the criminal justice system with a shared goal: improving offender resettlement and reducing recidivism. What distinguished the programme was its insistence that change was not the offenders' responsibility alone; practitioners, officers, local government staff, and politicians all changed too, and with them the services and agencies changed as a system. Ball describes the generative process as working 'like water finding its way through the land, creating rivers and streams where there were only channels and furrows' — change embedded itself in ways the designers had not anticipated when the work began. The focus throughout was on transitions, specifically the threshold crossing from one physical environment to another, above all from prison to community, and on the real, current choices that everyone involved had to make.
