Banter or bullying
Jane Ball
Where does banter end and bullying begin? Jane Ball brings her background in restorative practice and workplace dialogue to one of the most contested questions in organisational culture.
Jane Ball works at the boundary between restorative justice and organisational life, with experience applying dialogue-based approaches to workplace conflict, harm, and culture change. In this talk, she examines the distinction between banter and bullying — a line that is frequently blurred, disputed, or exploited in workplace settings. The same exchange can be experienced as warmth by one person and humiliation by another, and Ball explores how dialogue can help organisations develop the shared language and relational honesty needed to navigate that gap. Rather than offering a fixed definition, she points toward the conditions under which people can surface and examine the impact of their behaviour on others. The session raises questions that extend well beyond HR policy, touching on power, belonging, and the quality of listening within teams.
